Frequently asked questions

We have put together an extensive list of frequently asked questions that you will find helpful. If you have any questions that are not covered here, please do get in touch and we will be happy to help.

What causes gravel migration?

Without the right landscape systems, car wheels, footfall and rain can all cause gravel on a gravel driveway to shift and end up where it wasn’t intended to be. Careless or fast driving, allowing wheels to spin, can all kick up gravel, causing ruts and an uneven gravel driveway surface. Pushchairs or wheelbarrows can cause displacement, while heavy rain can also cause gravel to shift and be washed away.

Loose aggregate will always be prone to some movement, but gravel migration can be minimised by taking precautionary measures using the right landscape systems, such as installing a gravel retention system.

How do Gravelrings grids prevent gravel from moving and migrating?

Gravelrings gravel driveway panels are landscape products which are designed to hold gravel in place and prevent it from migrating to other areas, as well as from rutting and thinning. The interlocking grids feature a 25mm depth cellular structure with an integral mesh base, designed to be overfilled to avoid becoming visible while providing hidden stability beneath the gravel driveway surface. These features combine to prevent the shifting and sinking of the gravel aggregate.

What prevents the grids themselves from moving and lifting, and being seen?

The low profile of Gravelrings gravel grids, at just 25mm deep, combined with the intention of being overfilled with gravel, ensures not only that the gravel stays in place on the gravel driveway, but the grids themselves remain hidden. However, the addition of an integral mesh base is key to preventing gravel from working its way beneath the grid system, causing it to rise and create an uneven gravel driveway surface.

How easy is it to lay Gravelrings panels?

Gravelrings gravel retention grids are each 500mm2 and are delivered pre-assembled in 1m2 sheets, making them quick and easy to lay. The simple, clipping mechanism means a large area can be covered by these landscape products in a short period of time. Gravelrings landscape products also interlock seamlessly with Beauxfort’s Grassrings grass protection system.

What ground preparation is required before laying Gravelrings landscape systems?

The gravel driveway area will first need to be excavated to the correct depth. With Gravelrings, this will be less than other landscape systems, thanks to its low profile. Then lay a heavy duty geotextile fabric, such as DRIVETEX from Growtivation’s Product That Works range, to prevent aggregate settling into the soil beneath (the main cause of sinking and rutting).

A compacted, level and firm sub-base material ( MOT Type 1 aggregate or Type 3 for porous, SuDS-compliant installations) should then be laid to an appropriate depth for the intended traffic.

The last step is to blind the surface with a 5-10mm layer of sharp sand or granite fines. Your gravel driveway surface is now ready for the Gravelrings panels to be laid.

Can Gravelrings gravel grids be cut to fit around the contours of a space?

Yes. Gravelrings gravel driveway grids can be easily and quickly cut to shape using the correct tools and safety measures, to allow you to achieve full coverage of the space to be gravelled.

Can the Gravelrings gravel retention system be used on slopes?

Yes, where the slope has a gradient of no more than 1:5 (20 percent). Gravelrings’ flexibility and low profile (25mm) means the landscape systems will follow the contours of the land and with pre-drilled holes can also be fixed in place using Gravelrings Fixing Pins.

How can you mark out parking bays on a gravel car park?

With Gravelrings Parking Bay Markers, of course. A neat solution to marking out parking spaces on a gravel driveway or other gravel surface, these square modules push quickly and securely over the Gravelrings grid retention system. Available in white a standard, but with other colour options on request, the Gravelrings parking bay markers can be positioned in a range of formations to mark bay corners or delineate other areas.

Are Gravelrings permeable and SUDS-compliant?

Yes. A gravel driveway or other gravel surface installed using Gravelrings landscape products will create a fully permeable gravel retention system and ensure SuDS compliance. The integral mesh base of the gravel panels holds gravel in place but allows water to soak through the gravel driveway surface and into the ground.

Are Gravelrings gravel panels environmentally-friendly?

Beauxfort is committed to producing landscaping systems that do not compromise the natural environment. Made from 100% recycled plastic*, Gravelrings landscape products adhere to low carbon principles and contribute to sustainability, providing more room for natural systems and less room for harmful carbon-intensive materials such as concrete. Gravelrings landscape systems also reduce reflective heat and waterway contamination.

* Black Gravelrings gravel grids are made from 100% recycled material and white Gravelrings gravel grids from part-recycled material.

Where can Gravelrings gravel grids be used?

Gravelrings can be used anywhere that a gravel surface is required or desired. It is particularly suitable for landscaping schemes, gravel driveways and gravel pathways. It can also be used on sloped surfaces of less than a 1:5 gradient (20 per cent).

How easy is it to lay Grassrings panels?

Grassrings is a modular grass protection system and the 500mm2 mats are designed with a simple but firm clipping mechanism to join the panels together. This makes them landscape products which are suitable for large and small applications alike.

How does the Grassrings system prevent the grass from being damaged by vehicle traffic?

Grassrings panels are laid on a stone sub-base, then backfilled with soil and grass seed. This method and the strength of the panels protects the grass roots from being compacted by the weight of moving and parked vehicles. The open cell structure of the landscape products enables the roots to still get the air, moisture, and nutrients they need to survive, creating a grassed area that is not in danger of long-term damage when used for temporary parking.

How do you look after a lawn or grassed area that has had Grassrings installed?

Once Grassrings panels are installed and the ground seeded, the resulting grass simply needs to be treated as any other lawn, with watering and mowing as required. Grassrings landscape products protect against tyre damage from vehicles or rutting caused by their weight, which means no repair work will be required to restore the lawn after it has been used for temporary parking.

Where can Grassrings grass mats be used?

As well as being used to reinforce and protect grass in residential settings, Grassrings grass protection mats are premium landscape products which are suitable for use in caravan parks, golf courses and venue parking.

Are Grassrings landscape systems permeable and SUDS-compliant?

Yes. The open cell structure of Grassrings landscape products create a fully permeable grass parking area.

Are Grassrings panels environmentally-friendly?

Yes. Grassrings panels are manufactured from 100% recycled and recyclable, UV stabilised, impact resistant polymer.

Why do tree roots need to be protected when installing a driveway, path or road?

Soil is compacted beneath a driveway or other surface subject to the weight of heavy or frequent traffic. In turn, tree roots may be crushed and ultimately suffocated. Without healthy roots, a tree will not thrive or survive.

How does Groundcell protect tree roots?

The honeycomb-like, cell structure of Groundcell creates a sub-base above the surface which evenly spreads the imposed loads from vehicles using the surface, preventing damage to the roots, whilst providing a stable and solid base.

How do Groundcell landscape systems prevent soil erosion and stabilise embankments and slopes?

As a cellular confinement landscape system, made from textured and perforated strips of High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) connected together by ultrasonic welding, Groundcell landscape products protect, reinforce and stabilise soil. Once laid and pinned in place with Groundcell J Fixing Pins, the cells are filled with soil or aggregate. The honeycomb design of the panels prevents irregular settlement and washout of the cell contents.

Where can the Groundcell landscape systems be used?

Groundcell can be used beneath access roads and driveways where tree roots need to be protected, as well as on embankments and slopes. The Groundcell landscape systems are ideal for driveways, roads and embankments.

Is Groundcell permeable and SUDS-compliant?

Yes, these landscape systems are fully permeable, allowing the free flow of water and can be used in SUDS compliant schemes.
