5 quick and easy ways to improve your driveway

5 quick and easy ways to improve your driveway

A driveway is the first thing a guest sees when they visit and kerb appeal counts for a lot when it comes to selling a property. But don’t worry if your driveway could do with a little TLC, there are several easy ways you can improve it in no time.

  1. Tidy up

It sounds simple and it is. A little tidying up can go a long way. If you’ve got deciduous trees overhanging your driveway, keeping on top of clearing leaves in the autumn will help to keep your driveway looking smart and cared-for. If you have a gravel driveway, keep the gravel evenly spread and ‘plumped up’ with some light raking every so often. If your driveway is correctly installed with Gravelrings, this is unlikely to be an issue. Gravel driveways that have Gravelrings installed require minimal maintenance as the gravel grid structure helps to keep the gravel in place.Another significant advantage of a gravel driveway is that it doesn’t need cleaning. But if you have a block paved, asphalt or resin driveway, you will probably need to invest in a jetwasher and devote time to giving these surfaces a thorough clean.

  2. Neaten the planting

Keeping the areas around the driveway helps too. Neatening the planting that borders your driveway with regular weeding and cutting back can help boost the overall impression of your front garden. If pesky weeds are peeping through the driveway itself, these should be hand-pulled or treated with a weedkiller. Laying a suitable weed control fabric in any adjoining borders and planting schemes, prevents weeds from growing, although their seeds can still blow in and establish themselves on the surface.

  3. Smarten the edges

Whatever the surface of your driveway, keeping the edges neat and well-defined helps it look as good as new. If it’s bordered with lawn, keep the edges trimmed short for a manicured look. If it’s bordered with plant beds, ensure the soil is kept brushed into the beds and the plants don’t encroach on the driveway.

  4. Install outdoor lighting

As well as being practical by safely lighting your way in the evening, outdoor lighting can be a useful security feature too. It can also elevate the impression of your front garden and be an attractive feature for less money than you may think, thanks to a variety of solar LED options that don’t need hardwiring. Consider pillar lighting along the length of the driveway to create a welcoming glow in the evening.

  5. Consider resurfacing

Of course, nothing can improve a tired, cracked and worn driveway more than a total revamp. When it comes to choosing the best surface for a driveway, gravel is the most versatile option. Correctly laid with a specialist gravel grid system to keep the gravel in place, gravel offers an array of colours and sizes to suit all properties and budgets.
